Which handheld red light devices are actually FDA cleared?
In the handheld category: LightStim (multiple SKUs: K101190 For Wrinkles, K151333 For Pain, K212771 Elipsa) and Solawave 2-in-1 Skincare Mini (K250532, cleared 2025-05-22 via OEM Shenzhen Kaiyan Medical). Are handhelds as effective as panels or masks?
For the same treatment time and the same target area, no — handhelds cover a smaller spot, so total delivered energy per session is lower than a panel or full-face mask. Where handhelds win is specificity (targeted joint or spot) and portability (travel, gym bag). For a single problem area, a handheld is faster and cheaper. For full-face or full-torso routine, a mask or panel is more efficient.
Does the Kineon MOVE+ Pro really use lasers?
Yes — the MOVE+ Pro includes two laser modules (650 nm + 808 nm) plus LED modules. The laser modules deliver tighter beam collimation at depth than LED, which is the mechanistic argument for hitting joint capsules in the knee, shoulder, or elbow. Laser class requires eye protection compliance per the device manual. Not 510(k) cleared.
Why is LightStim picked over the cheaper Solawave?
Two reasons. First, LightStim has multiple 510(k) clearances spanning a decade (K101190 from 2010, K151333 from 2015, K212771 from 2022) — the longest cleared track record in the handheld category. Second, LightStim publishes specific wavelengths per SKU (e.g. 605 + 630 + 660 + 855 nm for "For Wrinkles"), while Solawave only describes "red LED" without nm values. Solawave wins on price; LightStim wins on transparency and clearance history.
What about LED Belts for back pain or muscle recovery?
LightStim sells a "for Pain LED Belt" (K151333) at the wearable end of the category — half-way between handheld and full-body. Hooga and Mito Red Light also sell belt-format LED wraps, none of which appear in openFDA. The belt format trades irradiance density (lower than a panel) for hands-free convenience and coverage of a moderate-size body area.
Can I use a handheld with retinol or other topicals?
Topicals generally are not a contraindication for LED — the wavelengths penetrate skin via different mechanisms than topical absorption. Standard guidance: apply LED on clean skin, then apply topicals afterward (retinol, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid). For prescription topicals (tretinoin, hydroquinone), confirm with your prescribing clinician — some have photo-sensitivity caveats unrelated to red light specifically.
